Grammarly isn’t just popular for no reason. Similar tools like WhiteSmoke, Ginger, ProWritingAid, LanguageTool and others have struggled to match Grammarly on most fronts.

This software is used to check for spelling and punctuation errors as well as grammar, passive voice, sentence structure, etc. Once you run your article on Grammarly it will recommend a bunch of corrections for you and can also be used to check for plagiarism.

Grammarly has a free version and a premium one. Of course, the free version has limited features, but if you are a decent writer and you only need to use Grammarly for a few corrections, in that case the free version should be sufficient for you.

One of my favorite things about Grammarly is that it has plugins that you can download and install on your chrome browser and on Microsoft Word to make checking your writing on everyday activities very easy.

If you want to see insights into the corrections that the app makes, then you will have to throw in a few bucks for the premium version of Grammarly.

It has an invaluable auto thesaurus that lets you find the synonyms to words simply by double-clicking on them. For me, this is one of the most rewarding parts of the application.

Hemingway is very easy and straight to the point.

To get started with Hemingway, visit the official website at hemingwayapp.com. Once you land on the page, you will find that there is already a colorful sample text on it. You can delete this text and then paste your own article on the space.

Once you have pasted your piece, click on the ‘edit’ option on the right top corner of your screen for Hemingway to look through your work for adverbs and passive voices.

Adverbs are valid elements in the English language, so why do we have to search with Hemingway for them?

Well, it is because they are known to prop up weak verbs every now and then. While you don’t need to eliminate every single adverb in your articles, it is important to ensure that your sentences are not dependent on them.

For example, doesn’t it sound easier to say “He hustled” rather than saying “He walked quickly”? So not only does removing adverbs reduce the number of words that you need to use, but it also makes the article easier to read.

Hemingway also helps to break down sentences that are hard to read. More often than not, these sentences are difficult to read because they are long and contain multiple phrases.

That’s not to say that all long sentences are hard to read. In some cases, they might be okay, but it depends on the reader and the type of writing.

Getting Started with Grammarly

Grammarly was the first grammar tool I used before I knew that other grammar tools existed, and maybe that is thanks to its name. I must have typed ‘grammar tool’ on Google and it popped up.

While I still had to improve on specific grammar skills, Grammarly helped me see patterns in my writing without the help of a professional editor in the early days of my career, and this was an essential first step for me especially because the app could catch errors that the standard Word Document and Google Doc couldn’t.

Once you are logged in to your account, you will see a page where you can upload your article by simply pasting it there.

Once your article has been pasted or uploaded, Grammarly will look through it and then underline words and sentences that require your attention.

As I have already mentioned, you don’t need to accept all the suggestions that Grammarly gives you. In fact, it would be very unusual if you do.

It is the best practice to read the sentences again and evaluate if the suggestion is correct for what you want to portray. If it is, then click on the green correction to accept it, otherwise click on ‘ignore’.

How to Use the Hemingway App

I will show you the process of using Hemingway, but first, you must note that Hemingway offers two options:

• The Hemingway Editor – This is the online editor, which we have already briefly talked about. It is 100% free and does not require that you sign up to use it.
• Hemingway App – This is the downloadable version of Hemingway that you can get access to after you make a one-time payment.

Now, let’s see how you can use both versions of the app.

Step #1 – To get started, first go to the Hemingway App website. You will find that the platform has a clean interface and it is straightforward.

If you prefer the paid desktop app then you can purchase it for a one-time fee. It is available for both Mac OS and Windows users.

Once you install it on your system, you will find that the interface is pretty similar to the online version, but it also includes some extra features:

Work offline – If you want to avoid the distraction of the online world or fancy working from some remote location that may or may not have network reception, then the app version is completely suitable for you.

Direct publishing – From the Hemingway app, you can publish your articles directly to your WordPress blog or elsewhere.

PDF exports – You can create PDF versions of your work after you have pasted them on the Hemingway editor. This can be really useful for a project’s sake since the PDFs will retain the colored highlights as they appear on the editor.

Just like Hemingway, Grammarly also has free and paid versions, but I suggest checking out the free version first to see if you like the experience of using it and how much improvement it brings to your writing.

Grammarly’s free account is not a free trial account, so it can stay free for as long as you want it to be.

To get started, follow these steps:

Step #1 – Create a free account by registering directly or using your Facebook or Google account to sign up.

Step #2 – Once you are signed in, you can type directly on the provided interface, paste a text, or upload a text file from your computer. Grammarly only accepts files that are in these formats: Docx, ODT, RTF, TXT.

Once you upload the file, Grammarly will show the text without any format for you to edit. When you are done editing and want to download the revised work, Grammarly will reinsert the initial format.

Step #3 – Set goals and customize your Grammarly to provide the feedback you seek. You can customize your goals based on the following:

It is minimalistic and very effective in helping be rid of typos and grammatical errors from your work, thereby improving its flow and presenting a better sentence structure.

I enjoy the ease with which you can log on to your account and land on your dashboard where you can upload new documents or work on existing ones.

If you have a lot of documents on your account, you can use the search box at the top to quickly find the one you are looking for.

Grammarly has a performance score that is its own version of Hemingway’s grade, only, in this case, Grammarly breaks down your article to show its speaking and reading time and the readability score.
