5 Best Ducksters Science Games In 2023

Gamified learning makes education enjoyable for both kids and adults. It removes the monotony of learning and helps associate learning with fun, something that many of us – kids and adults alike – fail to realize.

Ducksters is a website with tons of informational content and educational games. It spans all sorts of subjects, including biology, history, science, and others.

The science games, in particular, are enjoyable and educational. Using games for learning purposes isn’t only fun, but it’s also one of the best ways to learn. In fact, Ducksters is one of my favorite resources for educational science games.

In this article, I will be showing you my favorite ones.

The short version: I love the weather and animal games on Ducksters, but other favorites include the periodic table and energy sources games. Read on for the full list and for some Ducksters alternatives!

Overview of Ducksters Science Games

Ducksters is a gamified learning platform that is free to use. While it’s aimed at kids, learners of all ages can benefit from playing Ducksters games.

From puzzles to quizzes, Ducksters provides endless fun. All you need is a browser and an internet connection – the site doesn’t cost any money.

I find Ducksters very effective due to the wide range of topics covered and the ease of finding games covering specific topics. For example, in the biology subsection of the science games, you can browse games and activities related to topics such as:

• Proteins
• The digestive system
• Epidemics and pandemics
• Photosynthesis
• Vitamins and minerals
• Fungi
• And many others

These are neatly organized into categories such as:

• Cell
• Nutrition
• Genetics
• Living organisms
• The human body
• Disease

As such, the site is easy to navigate, even for kids. Regardless of what you have been studying in class, you can easily find a related game to solidify the knowledge that was covered in school and come back prepared for the next class.

Another reason I love Ducksters is that it gives a brief explanation of each topic. This way, learners can play games related to specific topics even if they haven’t yet covered them in school.

The topics are clearly explained so that even a child can understand them. People who don’t enjoy reading can listen to recordings of the explanations, provided at the bottom of each page.

The recordings are read by real humans (at least the recordings I listened to). They are not robotic readings produced by AI, which would not be pleasurable to listen to.

Furthermore, depending on the specific topic in question, there may be multiple games and activities, such as crossword puzzles, quizzes, and word games. This gives you different ways to learn and review a subject until the topic is solidified in your memory.

I also love how references and links are provided, so students can verify the facts stated and also learn more about a specific subject if they have an explorative mind.

Finally, I love Ducksters because it’s free! A lot of sites, even the free ones, limit you in terms of how much you can do.

Certain games or features may be hidden behind a paywall, and if you don’t upgrade, you won’t be able to enjoy full access to the site.

Ducksters is different in that it is forever free – there are no hidden upgrades that you will have to pay for down the line. You can learn as much as you like without having to pay.

One more thing: Ducksters is available on mobile as well, via your browser. While there is, unfortunately, no mobile app, the website is mobile optimized.

Some games (like the crossword puzzles) might not work as well on mobile, though, so you might have to switch to a computer for the best experience. Nevertheless, the site itself is mobile optimized and thus easy to navigate on mobile devices.

My Favorite Ducksters Science Games

With that said, let’s go over my top five Ducksters science games. I love these games because they teach a lot of information and are also enjoyable.

They have the perfect mix of challenge and fun. Regardless of your current level of knowledge in these subjects, I recommend trying out these games.

Let’s get into them.

1. The Periodic Table Game

The periodic table is a table that lists all the elements, such as gold and oxygen. It’s an important concept in chemistry, and your teacher may require you to memorize the periodic table.

Ducksters has a periodic table quiz that includes 10 questions about the periodic table. This quiz will help you test your knowledge of the periodic table and its elements and memorize knowledge you have forgotten.

On the periodic table page, you can also find links to explanations of the different elements in the periodic table, such as iron. Furthermore, there are links to other related topics to help you better understand the periodic table and chemistry.

2. Solar System Game

The Ducksters solar system quiz contains 10 questions about the solar system.

On the solar system explanation page, you can also find links to the explanatory pages of each planet, topics discussing the universe (such as stars, galaxies, and more), and other related topics, such as telescopes and astronauts.

One Ducksters feature we haven’t yet covered are the experiments! Ducksters features experiments that kids can try at home.

These experiments will give you a better understanding of the topic in question, as it will allow you to see how things work first hand.

Ducksters has an experiment on the angle of the sun and how it affects the Earth temperature and our seasons. The experiment requires only basic equipment, such as a flashlight, a weather thermometer, paper, and a ruler.

3. Weather Game

Weather is a very broad topic, and there are a lot of sub-topics related to weather on Ducksters. Let’s focus, for now, on the main weather topic on Ducksters.

Ducksters has many weather games and experiments. In addition to a 10-question quiz about weather, you can play the weather crossword puzzle.

The weather crossword puzzle is a fun game that tests your knowledge of different weather terms. For example, do you know what “a rotating column of air with very high wind speeds” refers to?

Can you fill in the blank in “an anemometer is used to measure the ____ of wind?”

Ducksters’ crossword puzzles are pretty challenging, and you can easily spend a lot of time with them. Don’t underestimate them!

Ducksters does provide a printable version of each crossword puzzle. That way, you can fill out the crossword puzzle the old-fashioned way, offline, on pen and paper.

I really like the weather word finder game as well. This game gives you various weather-related terms and a grid of different letters arranged in a seemingly random order.

However, the order isn’t really random, as there are hidden terms that you must find, such as “hail.”

The game comes with a timer, so you can see how fast it is taking you. Every time you find a word, you will earn 10 points.

Meanwhile, if you use the “solve” feature to reveal where a word is hidden, you will lose 10 points.

The goal of the game is to uncover all the hidden words and earn as many points as possible in as short of an amount of time as possible. This allows you to play the game as many times as you want, constantly aiming to do better than your previous score.

 

Don’t worry. While practice does make things easier, each time you generate a new game, you will get a completely new grid, with the letters arranged in different places. This way, every new game presents a unique challenge.

Then there are the experiments. The wind experiment is a lot of fun and teaches you how wind is created.

Meanwhile, the Coriolis Effect experiment helps kids understand the rotation of the Earth and how it affects the weather.

On the weather page, you can find links to related topics, such as weather forecasting, dangerous weather, seasons, hurricanes, tornadoes, and more. Each link comes with an explanation and a quiz or games.

I have always been fascinated by weather and how it works. If you love weather, you will love these weather games.

4. Energy and Energy Sources Games

The next Ducksters topic from my favorites is the energy topic.

The energy quiz contains 10 questions about energy in general, such as sources of energy and other topics related to energy.

However, on the energy page, you will find links to explanations of various energy sources, including:

• Renewable Energy
• Biomass Energy
• Geothermal Energy
• Hydropower
• Solar Power
• Wave and Tidal Energy
• Wind Power

You will also find a quiz and possibly other activities, such as crossword puzzles and word games, depending on the specific link.

You can also find links to other physics topics, such as motion and kinetic energy, that can help you establish a better understanding of energy in general and how it works.

5. Animal Kingdom Game

Finally, the last on our list is the Animals game. I love animals and enjoy learning about the animal kingdom.

The animals page on Ducksters includes links to a wide range of animals, where you can find explanations of each animal and learn more about it. You can also access animal-specific quizzes and games to help you learn more about the different animals in the animal kingdom.

You will notice that some animals are marked with certain letters, in red, next to their names. Here is how to interpret these letters:

• V means vulnerable
• E means endangered
• CR means critically endangered

These are different levels of classification that refer to the risk of a specific animal going extinct.

At the bottom of the page, you will find links to the animal word game and the animal crossword puzzle. These are two games that test your knowledge of the animal kingdom in a fun and engaging way.

Finally, Ducksters includes a list of animal movies appropriate for kids. If your child loves watching movies and loves animals, these movies can help them learn more and spend their time productively.

It specifies the age rating of each movie, so you can know whether it is appropriate for your child. It also tells you the type of animation it uses – for example, your child may prefer cartoon movies.

So, there you have it! Those are my five favorite games on Ducksters.

You can browse games by category, such as the skeletal, muscular, or respiratory system. Alternatively, you can browse by type of game – here are some of the types of games available on Anatomy Arcade:

• Crossword puzzles
• Jigsaw puzzles

However, what really makes Anatomy Arcade unique are its signature games, which include Whack a Bone and Poke a Muscle.

These are the classic games that Anatomy Arcade is known for, and there are different gameplay modes, such as “Duel” or “Tiny.”

2. NASA Kids’ Club

NASA Kids’ Club is also one of my favorite resources for science learning and games, especially about the solar system and NASA and its missions in particular.

Games are available for kids of all levels and ages.

For example, Flip Time challenges students to match the time on analog clocks to digital clocks.

Star Fall is a game in which kids have to capture stars of the same color. By capturing stars, they can make the stars disappear, and they will earn points.

Rocket Builder is a fun game for young students – it’s meant for students in first grade, but students of any age can play it. It provides learners with shapes that they can put together to build a rocket.

There are also games for kindergarten students and very young kids, such as It’s Not the Same, in which kids must compare two drawings and identify the ones that are not the same.

3. National Geographic Kids

National Geographic Kids started as a print magazine for children in 1975. Now, however, it features a comprehensive website full of educational resources and games for kids of all ages.

The games section is where you will find action and adventure games, puzzles, mazes, and more.

I particularly love the Space Explorer game, which involves exploring the planets of our solar system. While you explore, you’ll need to avoid obstacles and collect stars.

It’s an incredibly fun game if you love astronomy and space.

I also enjoyed the habitat puzzle game. This game gives you images from animal and plant habitats, and you need to place objects in the right part of the image.

It’s a great opportunity to learn more about rainforests and other interesting habitats around the world.

4. BrainPOP Science Games

Finally, we have science games from BrainPOP. BrainPOP is an educational website for kids with learning resources and gamified learning solutions on all sorts of subjects, but we will be focusing on the science games in this article.

Here are some of the games that are available, just to give you an idea:

• All About Bird Anatomy: This game allows you to build a bird by yourself, giving you a chance to learn more about bird anatomy. After the game, you can quiz yourself on bird anatomy with flashcards.
• Atom Touch: This interactive game lets you explore atoms and states of matter. It provides a simulation that lets you change temperature and pressure to see how states of matter change accordingly.
• BeastBox: This fun game lets you become a DJ by mixing beats with animal noises. See what kind of music you can create!
• Bending Light: This game lets you see how light bends when traveling from material to material. You can even create rainbows!
• Color Vision: Play around with RGB (red, green, and blue) colors and mix them together to create rainbows and more.
• Earthquake Game: Use triangulation to accurately predict when an earthquake will hit a fantasy city called Square City.
• Food Fight: This is a fun survival game you can play against someone else.

There are so many other games that let you explore topics like the periodic table, evolution, natural resources, energy sources, and more!

Things to Take Note Of

Before you use Ducksters, here are some things to consider about each game category. These are some thoughts and opinions I have developed while using Ducksters, and I would like to share them with you.

Quiz Games

The quiz games help you test your knowledge of each topic, and they give you a score at the end of each quiz. If you get 80% or above, that’s a pretty good score.

You will be shown the correct answer to each question at the end of each quiz, so it will help you identify what you didn’t know.

On the other hand, it has limited value. There are only 10 questions per quiz, and the quiz is exactly the same each time, so you can only take it once or twice.

Crossword Puzzles

The crossword puzzles test your knowledge of each topic but also give you a chance to use additional parts of your brain to combine words.

There are different types of hints, including fill-in-the-blanks. Sometimes, though, the hints are too obvious and pretty much give away the answer.

I like how you can print them out so you can complete them offline. That’s good, because the crossword puzzles are a bit hard to play on mobile.

Word Games

The word games are cool because unlike the other games, you earn points for each successful guess and lose points by choosing to allow the system to solve a question for you.

A new grid is generated with each game to avoid repetition, and there is a timer to help you challenge yourself.

However, in my opinion, the word games don’t actually test your knowledge of the subject. All you are doing is finding words in a grid – if you find the word “hail,” that doesn’t mean you know anything about hail.

Also, there is no multiplayer mode, and you can’t save your history to try to outperform your previous attempts.

About Ducksters in General

Ducksters is easy to navigate, so you can easily find games on any topic. The site is entirely free to use, so you will never have to pay.

The explanations are helpful, and links are included for additional research.

Nevertheless, there is a small selection of games available – quizzes, crossword puzzles, word games, and experiments seem to be most common in science, although geography has map games.

Not only that, but many topics and articles only have quizzes – no crossword puzzles or word games.

There is also no mobile app, which means playing on mobile can be difficult depending on the device you are using.

Finally, one thing I didn’t like was how it has so many ads (which is how Ducksters remains free), which can sometimes be annoying and slow down the site.

Best Ducksters Science Games: Recap

You can spend hours on Ducksters learning about different subjects – reading, listening to the audio when you’re multitasking, and playing games.

I recommend trying out a few Ducksters games and seeing how you like them. You may prefer the crossword puzzles, the word games, or the quizzes – everyone is different.

Among other games, I particularly like BrainPOP due to the large amount of games available in the selection, but NASA and National Geographic also have some good games for kids.
