15 Best Free GeoGuessr Alternatives in 2023

Looking to flex your geography muscles but don’t want to splurge on GeoGuessr’s premium plan? You’re in the right place. As someone who has spent countless hours playing GeoGuessr, I understand the excitement and challenge of exploring the world and testing your geography knowledge.

However, even the most devoted fans need a change of pace from time to time. Also, with GeoGuessr’s decision to shift towards a subscription-based model, many players are looking for free GeoGuessr alternatives to keep the adventure going.

While there is still a GeoGuessr free version, it is quite limited, giving you access to just one map and 2D panorama view. You will need a premium account for the classic 360-degree Google Street View and access to all the maps.

That’s why I’ve compiled this list of the best free GeoGuessr alternatives based on my gaming experience.

15 Best Free GeoGuessr Alternatives To Test Your Geography Knowledge

1. Geotastic – Best Free GeoGuessr Alternative

Geotastic is a free, crowdfunded geography game. The game is simple; you interpret your surroundings to discover where you are. It’s a flexible game such that you can move around your surroundings with a street view or guess using the maps. Also, players get free guesses that act as hints.

Suffice it to say that Geotastic is a GeoGuessr free alternative that supports multiple players. Users can either create a local game for a single-player mode or an online lobby game for multiplayer games. For multiplayer, only the creator needs to have an account. Other players can join the lobby and play without even owning an account.

Aside from the single-player and multiplayer game modes, Geotastic also features a challenge mode. This is relatively similar to the daily challenge mode that GeoGuessr features. Generally, GeoGuessr features more game losses and locations than Geotastic.

geostatic-geoguessr-alternative-meme

As a Geotastic user, there are a few customization options for you. Ideally, you can create your own maps with Geostatic, just like with GeoGuessr. You’ll have to contact the developer if there’s any map you want to add that isn’t featured. The same applies to other improvements.

While you pay to access all of GeoGuessr’s features, you can access Geotastic for free, although some features are reserved for people who donate. The platform is crowdfunded. The developer isn’t paying server costs with their own money but with money from donations.

Hence, as a Geostatic user, you’re expected to donate. You can donate via PayPal or SEPA bank transfer. Donations can be any amount with some users donating as little as €0.50 and others as much as €15.

You can also donate via Twitch subscriptions, and the developer currently has a Ko-fi page where you can support the project.

If you donate, you can enjoy an ad-free experience, which helps incentivize people to donate. The ads also help support the website.

Even after you donate, your account balance will drop as you play games, and once you no longer have a positive account balance, ads will return.

Depending on how much you donate, you will enjoy additional perks, such as supporter badges and the ability to create your own maps and challenges.

Furthermore, Geotastic now supports itself with merch sales.

Verdict: The advantage of Geotastic over GeoGuessr is that Geotastic is free to use and you can play single-player and multiplayer modes.

2. Seterra

The Seterra app lets you learn geography for free while having fun. It features geography quizzes on every continent and country on the world map. With this platform, you’ll learn more about country capitals, cities, rivers, lakes, and others.

seterra-meme-free-alternatives

In addition to quizzes, Seterra features several geography printables – pdf maps of countries and cities.

Seterra features nine different game modes including show all, learn, multiple, choice, pin, pin hard, type, type easy, and type with auto-complete. You can easily switch from one game mode to another while playing.

Although you can create a map with the map maker on GeoGuessr, with Seterra, you have to customize an existing map quiz to create a custom quiz.

While GeoGuessr can be translated into 10 different languages, Seterra can be translated into 40 different languages. This makes Seterra a better GeoGuessr alternative.

UPDATE: Seterra is now part of Geoguessr, but it remains a separate app. Geoguessr will continue to update and improve Seterra, adding new games, quizzes, and other cool features.

Seterra Pricing

Seterra now offers its apps for free. In the past, you had to pay $1.99 for full access to the Android or iOS app, but that is no longer the case.

Both the Android and iOS apps are available for free, and they are available in 15 languages, including Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, and others. It allows you to play the most popular quizzes from the online version and even use it offline.

Since Seterra now gives you unrestricted access for free, it is definitely the superior alternative to GeoGuessr, which hides most of its features behind a paywall.

3. City Guesser

cityguessr-banner3.pn

Here is a noteworthy free game similar to GeoGuessr on our list. The developer was inspired by GeoGuessr and he developed the game in 2020 right after GeoGuessr became more premium than free. However, it’s a lot more simplistic than GeoGuessr is.

It is a browser-based geography game launched and available to everyone. Despite being relatively new, City Guesser has been featured on top sites like PCGamer, and Product Hunt.

To play, all you need to do is to select any location, set the difficulty, and start guessing. You can select worldwide, USA, Europe, and Asia. Notably, City Guesser lets you play monument trivia. You get to explore different monuments from different parts of the world.

City Guesser features four game modes which include streaks, multiplayer, walking tour, and driving tour. The notable game mode here is the multiplayer mode. If you want to play GeoGuessr with your friends, you’ll have to play in breaks. With City Guesser, you and your friends can compete against each other via game rooms.

City Guesser features different giveaways to help users know their locations. This includes things like license plates, language, flags, business names, and road signs. You can access similar giveaways with GeoGuessr, but, once again, GeoGuessr gives you only 5 minutes every 15 minutes to play.

You can use City Guesser for free. The platform doesn’t charge yet, but you can enjoy a top-notch gaming experience as there are no ads on the platform. Optionally, you can help the developer financially by donating money for server costs.

Verdict: City Guesser was modeled after GeoGuessr. This makes the platform one of the best free game similar to GeoGuessr. The multiplayer features give City Guesser a major boost over GeoGuessr.

4. PlayGeography

Play Geography features some interesting geography maps. The free platform is owned by TeachMe. Notably, TeachMe is a platform that provides educational games and apps that are used by millions of users.

Aside from PlayGeography, other TeachMe games include MathGames, TypeRacer, and EdShelf. In fact, PlayGeography features up to 92 geographical maps with over 12,000 questions.

playgeography-meme-geoguessr-alternative

Similar to GeoGuessr, there are several different game modes you can play on PlayGeography. However, the game modes on both platforms are very different.

PlayGeography game modes include country location, flags, capitals, and country provinces. Each mode features more than 10 games with most of them having up to 30 quiz questions.

You can set different difficulty modes for each game mode. Not to mention, each game is timed and the faster you answer your question, the higher the points you earn.

The PlayGeography platform is completely free to use. You can play all game modes at zero cost, but it is only available online via the website. While GeoGuessr features applications for mobile devices, PlayGeography does not.

As a result, using GeoGuessr is a lot more comfortable than using PlayGeography. Nevertheless, the PlayGeography website is responsive on any device type. Also, users don’t need to download or install anything.

Another con of PlayGeography is that you don’t get many help resources compared to GeoGuessr that features a help center and user forum. You can only message the platform owners via email or by mailing their addresses.

Verdict: GeoGuessr has more specialized game modes than PlayGeography. However, PlayGeography features a larger number of quiz questions. Furthermore, you don’t spend money to use PlayGeography although the platform is web-based only.

5. GetLost

GetLost is another free alternative that was inspired by GeoGuessr. It’s a street view app that uses street view maps to display random locations for users to identify them. With no verification required, you can create an account to play in seconds.

This alternative doesn’t feature multiple game modes like GeoGuessr. However, its gameplay is unique. Users can identify the location on their screen by studying the street-side images or they can guess by clicking anywhere on the featured map. GetLost features locations from all over the world but most are in North America and India.

The points you get from each right guess depend on the proximity to the actual location. The lesser the distance in miles, the higher your points. Right now, the current max score is 5,000 per round.

Each game session consists of five rounds and you’re scored for each round. At the end of the fifth round, the total points earned is your game summary.

If you need help with the GetLost game, you can contact the developers via a contact form. The website doesn’t feature help resources like GeoGuessr.

GetLost Pricing

You can use GetLost for free to play just one game session of five rounds per day. Here are its premium pricing options.

  • Pro Monthly Plan – $3 per month
  • Pro Yearly Plan – $24 per year

The premium plan gives you access to unlimited play and an ad-free experience.

Verdict: GetLost and GeoGuessr have similar pricing plans. However, the advantage with GetLost is that you can always play one full game session per day for free.

6. Hide & Seek World

Once again, Hide & Seek World is a free geo game developed out of inspiration by GeoGuessr. However, Hide & Seek World is notably different from GeoGuessr as the platform is strictly multiplayer. You can either join a random game or create a game to play with friends.

The Hide & Seek world multiplayer game mode is relatively interesting. You hide somewhere, in any location of your choice, while other players try to guess your location.

hide-and-seek-geoguessr-meme

Hence, there’s one hider and multiple seekers. Each seeker earns points depending on how close their guess is. The seeker with the highest points after a game session wins.

To join a game, simply enter your name, pick a color and join.

On the Hide & Seek World website, there are live leaderboards for players with the best scores and the most wins. Up to 200 players are featured which shows that lots of people play Hide & Seek World.

Aside from multiplayer modes, Hide & Seek features the Battle Royale Mode. This same game mode is featured on GeoGuessr. However, the Battle Royale mode on Hide & Seek can only be played with friends. It doesn’t support playing with random people. Nevertheless, the gameplay isn’t much different from the multiplayer mode.

Hide & Seek World Pricing

The platform has a free version that allows you to play two public games per day. It also gives you access to the stats and leaderboard, the private chat feature, and the ability to join private games hosted by paying members.

For unlimited games, you will have to sign up for the Pro or Premium plan. The Pro plan gives you perks such as two super rare spirits and the ability to host games with four players, while the Premium plan gives you extra perks like one legendary spirit and the ability to host games with up to 20 players.

Here is the pricing scheme if you pay monthly:

  • Pro Plan – $2 per month
  • Premium Plan – $4 per month

You can also pay yearly, in which case the prices are as follows:

  • Pro Plan – $20 per year, which comes out to $1.67 per month
  • Premium Plan – $36 per year, which comes out to $3 per month

Verdict: If you want to play multiplayer geo guessing games, Hide & Seek World is one of the best GeoGuessr alternatives to consider.

7. World Geography Games

This entirely free platform was developed for kids and adults alike who want to test and improve their knowledge of geography.

It features several stimulating map games and it is not just about guessing locations. You can take a geographical quiz about countries, flags, capitals, regions, mountains, deserts, etc.

Like GeoGuessr, World Geography Games features maps of 193 countries (UN member states). However, it includes some Asian, Caribbean, and South American countries. With World Geography Games, you don’t need to create an account.

World Geography Games features more game types than GeoGuessr. You can try geographical trivia on just about any geographical factor. Aside from the ones mentioned earlier, you can take a quiz on volcanoes, islands, atmosphere, etc.

For each game round, you can score up to 25 points. The number of attempts before it takes to get the correct answer will determine the number of points you earn in a particular round. You can make an unlimited amount of attempts.

Similar to GeoGuessr, World Geography Games can be translated into seven different languages. This includes English, Spanish, French, German, Turkish, Polish, and Dutch.

Since you don’t have to create an account to play games on the World Geography Games website, you don’t have to pay for it either. World Geography Games is only available on the web. It doesn’t feature mobile applications like GeoGuessr.

Verdict: You can enjoy a lot more geographical games on World Geography Games than on GeoGuessr. Also, you don’t pay to use World Geography Games.

8. Ducksters

Ducksters is another top free GeoGuessr alternative on our list.

Aside from geography, you can learn about history, biography, science, and more on the platform. The Geography section lets you learn about world countries and more.

There are different mapping games featured on the platform. In fact, Ducksters is an ideal GeoGuessr alternative for learning about US Geography and US states. Likewise, this platform covers all continents.

You can take a quiz to identify different geographical features including topography, oceans, lakes, deserts, glaciers, islands, ecosystems, etc. There are other maps like the US political map and the Antarctic.

GeoGuessr and Ducksters both feature different and new game modes. With Ducksters, you can play geography crossword puzzles, geography word searches, guess the country, geography hangman, and several others.

Like most GeoGuessr alternatives mentioned, Ducksters scores players based on the accuracy of their guesses.

For each round, you’re entitled to three guesses. You get a deduction for each failed guess and you’ll be shown the correct location after exhausting all three guesses.

Ducksters is web-based only. It does not have a mobile app, but you can use it on your browser on mobile, although the experience won’t be as great as it is on your desktop, as while the website itself is mobile-responsive, the maps don’t always adapt to small screens fully.

The GeoGuessr free version is very limited, but you can access all of Ducksters’ games for free.

Verdict: GeoGuessr is a premium platform, while Ducksters is a free platform with interesting geography games.

9. Lizard Point

This is an online quiz platform for geography and other subjects like art, math, etc. Its name is derived from a location on the Lizard peninsula in Great Britain.

It was launched to foster fun education and unlike GeoGuessr, using Lizard Point is free. The website only features ads, and support is optional.

There are various types of quiz modes you can access on Lizard Point. The most popular is the country of Europe Quiz that allows you to identify European countries on the map. Just like you can create your maps with GeoGuessr, you can create customized quizzes with Lizard Point. It’s easy as you just pick questions about places you’re interested in.

If you’re a teacher, Lizard Point is more ideal for teaching students than GeoGuessr. You can create a teacher account and set up fun geography classes and quizzes. Hence, you can monitor each student’s performance using the Personalized Quiz Tracker.

Students can join these classes and quizzes when you share them, and they don’t need to create an account.

Notably, Lizard Point features a Study Mode. The Study Mode comprises several materials on countries and states (most especially US states). In this mode, you can learn about countries and states using the materials and at the end, you’re given a quiz. There are also practice and strict test modes.

The only con of Lizard Point, compared to GeoGuessr, is that the website isn’t responsive on mobile and it’s web-based only.

While Lizard Point is free to use, you can give a donation of the amount of your choice on the supporter page.

There is also an optional Individual monthly plan, which costs $3.49/month. It gives you access to an ad-free experience, priority support, and other perks, like the ability to customize many quizzes.

Verdict: Lizard Point is an ideal GeoGuessr alternative for teachers and schools. Also, it’s free to use.

10. Zoomtastic

Zoomtastic is a free and simple alternative but also a very educational one. It doesn’t require registration or creating an account. Notably, Zoomtastic’s gameplay is unique and requires speed.

You get a view of a random country and you have just 30 seconds to guess the name of the country. As the timer reads, the map gradually zooms out which gives you more hints to guess the country correctly. During the last 20 seconds, you’ll be presented with four possible answers and you get to choose which is correct.

You can play without time limits. When you attain high scores, you become one of the best players and you’ll be featured in the top 100 players list on the website.

Zoomtastic features only one game mode, unlike GeoGuessr that features about four different game modes.

A major disadvantage of Zoomtastic is that you cannot enjoy its gameplay on mobile devices. Hence, Zoomtastic is best played on a desktop or laptop.

Verdict: Although you can’t play Zoomtastic on mobile phones, it’s an ideal alternative because it is free and it has unique gameplay.

11. GuessWhere

GuessWhere is a free, simple, and fun game. There are 26 versions of the game at this moment.

The original game, GuessWhere 1, has 50 locations. You will see a random location on the map, and it is your job to guess where that place is.

Zoom into the map, select where you think the location is, and then click on Enter. GuessWhere 2 has another 50 locations, and the other GuessWhere games also have many locations, with some of them having specific themes, such as:

  • 50 coastal locations
  • 50 airports
  • 50 locations all starting with the letter B
  • 50 difficult locations (challenge yourself!)
  • 50 locations in Spain
  • 50 locations in Italy
  • Various locations in the UK
  • Nordic locations
  • Swedish cities
  • NCAA stadiums

As such, you can keep on playing this game without getting bored. With so many locations to choose from, the app provides plenty of fun.

Alternatively, you can click on GuessWhere Roulette. Select some parameters, such as your minimum population and the maximum locations per country, and then generate a seed link so you can play the game.

Let yourself get surprised and challenge yourself to find out your real knowledge of the world!

12. Where Am I

Where Am I is a free location guessing game that is a great alternative to Geoguessr if you don’t want to pay anything to play a geography game. There is no need to log in or create an account to play the game; just visit the website and you will be presented with a map.

Your task is then to figure out where you are. You can navigate down the street using the arrows to see a 3D view of the surroundings, using the Google Street View API.

If you have ever used Google Street View or the Google Street View API, you will be familiar with this function. Navigating down the street can give you extra clues, such as car models or the styles of houses that might indicate in which country or city you are in.

You might also look at street signs or graffiti and the language they are written in to gather more information about where you are. Once you think you got it, you can zoom in to where you think you are on the map and click on Submit.

You can always reset the game or refresh to get a new game at any time. you will continue to be presented with random locations.

The game is fun and pretty straightforward, providing endless geography guessing opportunities.

While the game is free to use, you can donate to help keep the project going by clicking on the Donate button.

13. Geoguess Master

Geoguess Master is a free alternative to Geoguessr. Despite the somewhat similar-sounding name, the two apps do not have any connection, although it is possible that the creators of Geoguess Master were inspired by Geoguessr.

In either case, the app allows you to play the game by yourself or with friends. If you choose the multiplayer mode, you will be able to create a room that your friends can join.

You can also select from two modes: World and Japan. As of now, I did not see any other countries there.

Then, you will be taken to a random street view. There are five rounds in each game, and your goal is to figure out where exactly in the world the street view is.

You can use the Google Street View arrows to navigate down the road to gather more clues about the location.

Geoguess Master uses the Google Streetview API. You may wonder how this is possible, given that one of the reasons that Geoguessr started charging for the game was because of new pricing for the Google API.

The answer, according to the Geoguess Master Github page, is that the creator uses the free tier of the Google Street View API. However, to be able to do that, the app has a daily quota; once this quota is reached, you can not play the game anymore that day.

However, the Github page also provides instructions on how to build this project on your own local server, so check it out.

14. Geoguess

Geoguess is a good alternative to Geoguessr if you have some technical know-how. Due to Google Streetview API limitations, it requires you to deploy the game on your own server, but it provides instructions on how exactly to do that.

Nevertheless, if you have zero technical know-how, it might be a bit complicated.

According to Geoguess, it shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to follow the guide and set up your own game server, which will allow you to play an unlimited number of games for free.

You can play this game with up to five friends by creating a game room and inviting your friends to join. Each game has five rounds, and your score will be determined by your performance throughout these rounds.

It is distributed under the MIT license and is free for everyone to use.

15. MapCrunch

Another free alternative to Geoguessr is MapCrunch. MapCrunch was not originally designed to be a guessing game, but you can definitely use it as such – more on that in a bit.

MapCrunch is an exploration tool that uses Google Street View. You can click on the green Go button to be transported to a random location, or you can click on Options to drill down and select a specific country.

While the game was designed to be an exploration tool, you can use it as a guessing game by simply not looking at the location, which is only indicated in small letters on the top-left side of the map.

Furthermore, people have created various user scripts that make it a lot easier to use MapCrunch as a Geoguessr-style game. Check them out on this Github page.

For example, one script maximizes the street view and hides most of the buttons and toolbars on MapCrunch. However, the most useful script would be Hide Location Names, which hides the name of the location to avoid spoilers.

You can also check out the Hide Street View Labels script, which hides the labels on roads.

Is there a Free Alternative to GeoGuessr?

There are no-cost ways to flex your geography muscles. You’re not just stuck with GeoGuessr. There’s a whole world of free (or freemium) alternatives that can keep you sharp. Here’s the quick list:
  • City Guesser
  • Geotastic

  • World Geography Games
  • Seterra
  • GetLost
  • Hide & Seek World

These games aren’t just GeoGuessr knock-offs; they bring their own spin to geography-based gaming.

For instance, City Guesser and Geotastic are top picks for those who want the full experience without dropping a dime.

What are the Main Differences Between GeoGuessr and its Free Alternatives?

Wondering how GeoGuessr stacks up against its free alternatives? Let’s break it down:

Pricing:  GeoGuessr transitioned to a paid model in 2019 when Google upped its Maps API fees. Now, the free GeoGuessr version locks you into a single map with 2D views. Want the full array of maps and 360-degree Street View?

You’ll need to pony up for a premium account. Most free alternatives, however, still give you a solid range of features without the price tag.

Gameplay Mechanics: While free alternatives often mimic GeoGuessr’s style, some bring unique twists. Take City Guesser; it swaps out Google Street View for real video clips, challenging you to identify locations based on what you see in the videos.

Location Diversity: Some freebies offer a wider scope of locations than GeoGuessr. For instance, PlayGeography doesn’t just have more questions but also ditches the need for logging in.

Multiplayer Options: Unlike GeoGuessr, several free alternatives come with multiplayer modes. Geotastic, for example, pits you against other geography buffs in real-time trivia showdowns.

So, while GeoGuessr has its merits, these free alternatives hold their own, offering unique gameplay features and more pricing flexibility.

How to Play GeoGuessr for Free Without Paying?

Looking to get your GeoGuessr fix without shelling out for a subscription? You’ve got options:

  2. YouTube Guides: Some YouTube channels dish out hacks for playing GeoGuessr on the cheap. They might just show you how to unlock premium perks without paying a dime..
  3. Free Alternatives: Why not branch out? Games like City Guesser and Geotastic offer geography challenges for zero cost. These titles either come entirely free or have a scaled-down free version. Plus, some even feature multiplayer modes and diverse settings.

Bottom line: Even if GeoGuessr’s free version falls short, other avenues let you play without loosening the purse strings. Whether it’s leveraging YouTube tips or diving into free alternatives, you’ve got ways to stay in the game.

While the GeoGuessr free version is still available – you can go with any of the games listed above. However, Geotastic and Seterra are recommended as the best free GeoGuessr alternatives.

Geotastic also has its own discord server, where Geotastic players can talk with each other. The owner also occasionally chats with Geotastic players on the server.

Interestingly, Seterra has over 400 free map quizzes you can play, while its mobile app is free to use, with no restrictions.

Furthermore, with support for 40 major languages, it is ideal for multilingual users.
